Madison appealing Gold Cup penalty to APBA
Miss Madison Racing is appealing a penalty it was assessed in the final heat of this year's APBA Gold Cup, a move that could send shockwaves throughout the sport.

The team filed its appeal with the American Power Boat Association shortly after the season finale in San Diego last month. If upheld, the appeal could change not only the results of the Gold Cup, but the National High Points Championship as well.

"We've sent in our $1,000 to the APBA and we are proceeding," Miss Madison President Bob Hughes said Tuesday. "We had 30 days from Sept. 15 to appeal."

Brown comes up gold after penalty on David
DETROIT, Mich. - Steve David's third penalty of the weekend cost him a chance at Gold, leaving the door wide open for Kip Brown to achieve immortality.
Brown picked up his first career victory and did so in the biggest race of the season, winning the American Power Boat Association Gold Cup on the Detroit River on Sunday.
Brown joined his father-in-law and uncle in the Gold Cup-winning fraternity. And in doing so, put himself among the elite of the sport.
"I just don't know what to say. I had no inkling that I was going to win this race," Brown said. "We were about the fourth-fastest boat out there all weekend long. We garnered enough points despite my terrible driving yesterday to get into the final and we got a little luck which is what we needed.

Oberto throttles field in final heat
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Steve David hit his start perfectly and was never threatened en route to a dominating H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Series win on Folsom Lake in Sacramento, Calif., on Sunday.
David, driving the Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison, found himself in lane four of the final heat but used that position to his advantage. He avoided a near-collision behind him and used the momentum from the outside to hit the start-finish line at full speed and never look back.
"I just wanted to get out ahead and keep all the crap behind me," David said by phone Sunday night. "I nailed the start and was able to carry that momentum through the first turn. After the second lap, it was pretty much over."

Brown to remain Qatar driver
The Spirit of Qatar name will stay on the Our Gang Racing entry and Kip Brown will remain as driver for the rest of the season the team announced recently.

In the February event, the Our Gang ran under the Spirit of Qatar banner with the number '95,' a change from the Qatar's normal number '96.'

Plenty of changes in H1 Unlimiteds 'offseason'
The "offseason" from 2012 to 2013 has only been three weeks but when the H1 Unlimited Series returns to the water this weekend in Doha, Qatar, there will be plenty of changes.

Two teams have switched sponsors, the winningest driver in the sport will not be in attendance and according to one news source, the series no longer has a title sponsor.

Such is the backdrop for the 2013 season opener which will kick off Friday morning local time and conclude on Tuesday as part of Qatar's National Sports Day.

Ellstrom hoping quick fix has Qatar ready for 2013 opener
The Spirit of Qatar racing team is facing a quick fix after the fire that ravaged that unlimited hydroplane during the season finale in Doha two weeks ago.

The boat caught fire during Heat 4A of the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship when it hit a wave, launched into the air and landed hard on the water. The impact broke motor mounts, snapped fuel lines and caused the engine to catch fire.

Driver Dave Villwock scrambled out of the boat and was able to pull the engine cowling off but the Lycoming turbine engine was a complete loss. After an inspection, it was determined that the boat itself was also seriously damaged by the heat and flames.
